The Amazing Grace of God!
Jesus was so “in the face” of the Jewish establishment, as He called out the hypocrisy and oppression this leadership had come to represent. Matthew, reminding us of the thread he’s been pulling since chapter 1, connects the dots back to the OT and points to Jesus as the fulfillment of these compassionate expectations. “If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.” (Matthew 12:7, NIV)
